January 2023 Monday Meeting – Kathy Menzie Threadscapes
January 16, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
New Location!!!!!
Kathy Menzie is a quilt artist in Topeka, Kansas. Though she has sewn all her life, she didn’t begin quilting until 2015.
After a career in public relations and higher education, Menzie’s new direction took her from making quilts for beds, to making quilts that hang on the wall.
Using her own photos for scenes and designs, Menzie uses fused fabric, raw edge quilting, and thread painting to create her art quilts. Both the everyday scenes from Kansas and the more exotic scenes from her travels in the US and abroad help provide inspiration and ideas.
While most of her quilts can be described as representational, there are also elements of folk art and whimsy in many of her designs. Her work has been shown in Quilting Arts, Art Quilt Quarterly, and Simply Modern and her quilts have been displayed in shows from Massachusetts to California, including a show at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.
One quilt titled, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” appeared in a book on “Quarantine Quilts, Creativity in the Midst of Chaos.” The quilt was purchased by the juror and donated to the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.
